The Shopping Cart Report (2004 Revised Edition):
E-Commerce Software and Store-Building Applications
If you don't already have Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader, you can download a FREE copy here. You'll find you'll use it a lot.
If you need to open the Zipped version, you'll need to install a program like WinZip. Unfortunately I can't answer questions about these tools. I just don't have the staff.
One of the most important e-commerce decisions you'll make is your choice of a shopping cart program -- the complex software that allows you take orders, calculate tax and shipping, display products, and build your online catalog. The right one will energize your store, while the wrong one will drag you down.
The Shopping Cart Report will help you decide which program is best for your particular application.
This Second Edition has been almost entirely rewritten and published on January 28, 2004. It
includes four parts and is nearly three times as long as the first
edition -- 766 pages.
1. Overview of E-Commerce Software. Here I describe the various
features that are common and what you can expect of up-to-date
programs. I review the state of the market, offer a shopping cart
popularity survey, and list 36 programs to which I've awarded the
Web Marketing Today Award of Merit 2004.
2. Shopping Cart Selection Guide. I list my recommendations for
twelve different kinds of typical shopping cart needs, suggest
what to look for in a shopping cart, and a provide a detailed 92-
question survey you can use to compare one program with another.
It gives you questions you can ask vendors.
3. Directory. Includes a comprehensive directory of about 225
active shopping cart programs, plus other e-commerce services and
a list of discontinued carts that I have been able to identify.
Owners of this e-book also have access to a password-protected,
online searchable database containing this data, which I'll update
occasionally.
4. Detailed Surveys. I posed the 92-question survey to about 50
leading vendors. This section includes their detailed descriptions
of their carts point-by-point so you can compare one with another.
"Your Shopping Cart report is wonderful. I'm almost done reading the report. It is saving me weeks of research time, and is an excellent introduction into the world of ecommerce. Thank you for such a great document!" -- Brigitte K. Rouleau, President, Ready... Set... Grow, LLC
